На мой взгляд, теологическое образование Лейтера не прошло зря - в его работах неуловимо ощущается попытка смирения и познания\всесущность Бога. Его работы привлекают мягкостью фокуса и сочетанием полутонов, однако главное в них ИМХО - привносимое автором добавленное значение в повседневные сюжеты. В этих снимках все же как-то особенно глубоко ощущается бесконечность и бренность бытия, могущество и бедность человеческого духа.

To snick unnoticed moving in the heart of the city, to see and not be seen, to observe, with amused or at times horrified eyes, apparently trivial but actually significant details of the great urban movement: a fresco of objects, cars and people which expresses itself in contradictory movements, producing a rhythm of unexpected improvisations. Saul Leiter (born in 1923 in Pittsburgh, studded theology but ended up being mostly a fashion photographer) followed the philosophy of the real street photographer who leaves his studio and walks along the pavements to seek the pulsating rhyme of his age in the neon signs and the faces of passers-by. He was friends with abstract Expressionists and was influenced by Henri Cartier-Bresson, whom he met at some stage. However, there are no particular mimicking and influence trend to be found in his images: he puts photograph by photograph, a set of coherent pictures with unusual originality. The colour he turned to find new forms, to confuse and clarify the sense of a city vision in the eyes of the viewer: tarnished glass, reflections, the mirror that reveals and suggests, and an artist's blurness. Leiter's transparencies are extremly sophisticated and simple, direct and comprehensible to everyone.
